Title Session: Building Capacity, Partnerships, Sustainability: A discussion with the Microcredential Course Team
Speakers: Sara Weinberg, Paola Caicedo, Nell Cobb, Dr. Gastrid Harrigan, Nicole Hovorkova
Description: The panel will engage the audience in the development of an AP Microcredential Course at Broward College by discussing a need for AP to more formally build on the capacity, partnerships, and sustainability within school districts. The question that helped us frame the need was, “How do we increase the number of teachers in BCPS with knowledge and experience in the Algebra Project Pedagogy and Curriculum?” Currently AP has structures around supporting inservice teachers but there hasn’t been a structure or process in place to work with preservice teachers in South Florida.
Drawing from Bob Moses’ organizing philosophy in the civil rights movement, we understood the importance of strengthening the relationship with the local college as an integral partner in addressing the need. From this, the idea of creating a Microcredential Course at Broward college was formulated. The panel will provide various perspectives of the work for conceptualizing, developing, implementing, assessing, and extending the course. The panel will include:
Experienced AP Teachers/BCPS Mathematics Instructional Specialist
AP Professional Development Staff
BC Professor/BCPS Principal
BC Student
